It housed a community of Carthusian monks from its founding in the 16th century until its expulsion in 1835. Although it blends various styles, it represents one of the pinnacles of Spanish Baroque architecture.
Currently, it is considered a Site of Cultural Interest and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasure by decree of June 3, 1931.
The church, along with the sacristy, is undoubtedly the most impressive part of the complex and one of the most important works of the Spanish Baroque. The photos show the grandeur of the choir, along with the lay access to it. The Carthusian Order is a contemplative monastic order that considers silence a means to achieve contemplation and meditation.
