This magnificent Romanesque Christ, dated to the beginning of the first third of the 13th century, is housed in the so-called Museum of the Middle Ages (Musée du Moyen Âge) or Cluny in Paris.
That age alone blows my mind, because of what all that time means. People are not kind to each other or kind to art & other's beliefs. This is amazing!
Yes, and it's made of wood... but clothes have been found in some countries even older. For example, Egyptian ones (before Christ). Others are of a similar age (the Tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn -14th century-).
Throughout history, people who loved artworks have preserved them. Goodwill people have always existed... 😉
I'm so grateful for those people. Usually I hear of “finds" buried in rubble or in the earth. This is preserved. Someone cared for it & then passed it on to someone who cared for it. I'm thinking of a linage of caregivers….I love it!
The 1st third? I read that date 4 times & it sunk in. Omgosh this is magnificent. And it still exists. 🤯
Hello Maryellen,
Yes, it's a miracle that these artworks actually have survived wars, revolutions and the passage of time.
Anyway, this is from the last third of the 12th century approximately. If somewhere it says it's the 1st third, it's not correct.

We all should be. A lot of art have actually been destroyed, so this is a deposit for the future generations.
